Another long and restful weekend is expected by the working class Filipinos this coming Friday due to the recent announcement issued by the Malacañang Presidential office. Signed and formalized by President Benigno ‘NoyNoy’ Aquino last week is Proclamation No. 26 declaring Friday, September 10, 2010 as a regular non-working holiday covering the entire Philippine archipelago. This is in line with the observance of the ‘Eid ul-Fitr’ or the ‘Feast of Ramadan’. Eid ul-Fitr is an annual Muslim holiday commemorating the end of the Ramadan or the ‘Islamic holy month of fasting and purification’.
According to Malacañang, the issuance of Proclamation No. 26 is to promote camaraderie and brotherhood for fellow Muslim and non-Muslim Filipinos by instilling the cultural and religious significance of the Eid ul-Fitr to the fore of the Philippine national consciousness.
